What hail and wind do to a roof

Hail bruises shingles. The hit knocks the grit off and cracks the mat under it, and the spot often doesn't leak for months. From the ground the roof looks fine. Wind lifts shingles and breaks the seal strip, so the next storm peels them back. It also bends flashing and tears off ridge caps.

None of that shows up well in a drone photo or from the street. It shows up when someone kneels on the slope and looks.

How the storm inspection works

  1. Call or send the form. Someone from the office calls or texts to set a day and time.
  2. Someone gets on the roof. Not a drone shot from the street. A person walks every slope and looks at the flashing, the vents, the valleys and the pipe boots.
  3. You get the photos the same day. You see what we saw. Nothing is described to you that you can't look at yourself.
  4. The price comes in writing before any work starts. If a repair will fix it, the estimate says repair. Replacement only gets written up when the roof needs it.

On a storm job the inspection also checks the gutters, downspouts, window screens, siding and AC fins. Those are where hail leaves the clearest marks, and they help show which direction the storm came from. All of it gets photographed.

Photos the same day

You get the photos the same day as the visit. Each slope, the hits, the lifted shingles, the flashing, the gutters. You can look at them on your phone and see the same thing we saw. Nothing is described to you that you can't check yourself.

A written estimate, repair or replace

The estimate says what's damaged, where, and what it takes to fix it. If the hail hit one slope, it says repair that slope. If it's across the whole roof, it says replacement and the photos show why. Price in writing before any work starts.

We don't tell anyone their roof is wrecked before we've been on it. If the roof is fine, you'll hear that too.

If the roof is leaking now

Call the 24/7 emergency line at (210) 788-1593. A tarp goes over the leak so the inside stops taking water. Crews wait until the weather has passed before going up, for their safety. The full inspection happens once the roof is safe to walk. More on the emergency tarping page.

Gutters, siding and more

Hail and wind rarely stop at the shingles. Dented gutters, cracked siding and chipped paint show up on the same inspection. Those get their own lines on the estimate, and the exterior restoration page explains how that work runs.

Roof leaking right now? Call the 24/7 emergency line at (210) 788-1593. For everything else, call (210) 760-2828 or send the form.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should I get my roof checked after a storm even if I don't see damage?

Yes, if the hail was big enough to dent cars or gutters, or the wind was strong enough to take down branches. Hail bruises often don't leak for months, and lifted shingles look normal from the ground. The inspection is free and takes someone on every slope. If there's nothing wrong, you get the photos and that's it.

What does a hail hit on a shingle look like?

A round dark spot where the grit has been knocked off, often soft to the touch, sometimes with a crack in the mat underneath. New hits are dark because the asphalt is exposed. Old wear looks different: even, spread out, no bruise. The inspection photos show the hits up close so you can tell the difference yourself.

How soon after a storm can someone come out?

Call (210) 760-2828 or send the form and the office will set a day. After a big storm the schedule fills quickly, so the earlier you call the sooner the slot. If water is coming in now, call (210) 788-1593 and a tarp comes first. Inspections go up once the roof is dry and safe to walk.

Will you say my roof needs replacing when it only needs a repair?

No. That's the rule on every roof we inspect. If the hail hit one slope and the rest is sound, the estimate says repair that slope. Replacement gets written up when the damage is across the roof, and the photos show it. You'll have the pictures, so you can hold us to it.

Do you check the gutters and siding too?

Yes. On a storm inspection we look at gutters, downspouts, window screens, siding, fascia and AC fins. Hail leaves clear marks on soft metal, which helps show how hard it hit and from which side. Anything damaged gets photographed and gets its own line on the written estimate, separate from the roof.

I had a roofer knock on my door after the storm. Should I use them?

Ask them two things. Will they get on the roof, and will they send you the photos the same day. Then ask for the price in writing before anything starts. If the answer to any of those is no, keep looking. Anyone can hand you a flyer. What matters is what they do on the roof.
